The Fern Family Interviews Allison van Diepen

The Fern Family—Clare, Perry, and Starla—run Fern Family Readings out of their home in Eastport, MA. (Actually they just live in the pages of my Clarity books.) But today they’re welcoming Allison into their reading room for a little Q&A.

Perry (looks Allison up and down): How you doin’?

Clare (punches Perry in the arm): Ignore him. Welcome to our home. Have you had a psychic reading done before? If so, what did you think of it?

Allison: Only once, when I was fifteen. The psychic was actually my grandmother, and she used playing cards. Her reading was right-on, and she predicted things that would happen over the course of my whole life. I’ve never had another psychic reading, and don’t intend to. The truth is, I’d rather not know the future.

Starla: Well, that’s good because no one can-

Perry (sighs): Not this again.

Clare (closing her eyes): Think about your book, THE VAMPIRE STALKER, for a moment. I will read your mind and then tell everyone what it’s about.

What if the characters in a vampire novel left their world--and came into yours?

Amy is in love with someone who doesn't exist: Alexander Banks, the dashing hero in a popular series of vampire novels. Then one night, Amy meets a boy who bears an eerie resemblance to Alexander. In fact, he IS Alexander, who has escaped from the pages of the book and is in hot pursuit of a wicked vampire named Vigo. Together, Amy and Alexander set out to track Vigo and learn how and why Alexander crossed over. But when she and Alexander begin to fall for each other, Amy wonders if she even wants him to ever return to the realm of fiction.

Is that right?

Starla (sighs): Clare just memorized that passage from the back of your book. I’m the real telepath in the family. Clare, stick to your own ability.

Clare (laughs): Okay, back to the interview. Our business is in a tourist town on Cape Cod. What is your favorite vacation spot? And where would you love to visit that you haven’t yet?

Allison: I fell in love with the south of France a few years ago and can’t wait to go back. And I spent my honeymoon in Cuba. It was so beautiful and lively. I’ve never been to Australia, but I would love to go.

Perry: If you could have any psychic or paranormal gift, what would you choose? Don’t choose mine. It sucks.

Allison: I would like to be able to see the future and have the power to change it.

Clare: Give us an insider secret about the creation of your book. Come on, we’re good with secrets.

Allison: The original title of the book was AMY AND ALEXANDER. Not a catchy title, I know, but it shows that at heart it’s a love story between two people—Amy, an avid reader, and Alexander, the guy she falls for while reading his story. I love the new title THE VAMPIRE STALKER because it highlights Alexander’s dangerous work and, hopefully, lets the reader know they’re in for some excitement!

Starla: Let’s close out with some easy questions. Pool or beach?

Allison: Beach.

Clare: Favorite food?

Allison: Pizza. How original is that?

Clare: It’s perfect. In fact, there’s a great place on the boardwalk we can get a couple slices at. Let’s go!

Starla: Thanks for visiting. I can’t wait to read THE VAMPIRE STALKER!
